Interview with Gianna Rosales

Gianna Rosales is our special guest for Harbinger Magazine this month. She is a poet
and a creative writer. We welcome her on board as our new music Journalist.
She will be opening doors for musicians and bands from El Paso, Texas and Las
Cruces, New Mexico, down on the sunny US border. Let’s find out about Gianna and
what she brings to the table. Thank you for granting us this interview.

Where were you born and where do you reside now?

I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. I currently still live in El Paso, it’s a beautiful
city with an amazing culture and community. However, I do have aspirations to move to
a different city after college and see more of what this beautiful world has to offer.

When and how did you discover the Ode To Quetzalcoatl record?

I discovered Ode To Quetzacoatl via the song Morning Sun. Someone I used to be
close to introduced me to the song and from there I took it upon myself to listen to and
understand the rest of the album.

What attracted you to it and what are some of your favorite songs from this album and other songs of the Bixby collection?

For me personally, the soulful and spiritual component of Ode To Quetzacoatl was what
attracted me to the record. As someone who has dealt with an array of mental and
emotional hurdles throughout my life, listening to a record that was not only beautiful
musically, but told a story of understanding one’s life and the necessity to take control of your own destiny really spoke to me. My favorite songs from otq are Morning Sun, Drug Song, Free Indeed, Waiting For the Rains, and Mother. Aside from otq my favorite song from the Bixby collection is Soft Winds off of the Return of Quetzacoatl record. Others I really love are from Harbinger Second Coming, Rainbow and Control.

You invited David Bixby to a Zoom meeting to answer questions you had about the
content of some of his songs. How did that go and what was your takeaway?

The zoom meeting I had with David Bixby went exceptionally well. I had questions
regarding the inspiration behind Ode to Quetzacoatl as well as the song Soft Winds. I
was fortunate enough to be able to have a discussion about spirituality and how that
has played an imperative role in his song writing. I walked away from the meeting
having a better understanding of the songs themselves as well as the process in writing
them. As a writer myself it felt comforting to see how spirituality and devastating
experiences can be transformed into something that speaks with people, I walked away
feeling inspired.

In closing what would you like to say to our readers?

It is an honor to be able to work with David Bixby. In my personal opinion he is one of
the best composers I have ever found. I look forward to helping in his mission to find
other beautiful and talented artists. I am beyond excited to discover new music, gain
understanding, and help the careers of other artists.

Here is one of Gianna’s poems:

Hallucinogenic Naivety
March, 2023

We dance through lush fields
Poisoning our minds and bodies until the green of the field blurs and spurts of color waltz in front of our
eyelids
We feel ourselves moving though the air

Fast

Slow

And all at once

Our souls transcend and our bodies lay softly against the grass and dirt
Until we are reunited with our mother, the earth

Embracing the irony of how something that can kill you may also free you
Perhaps to be free is to kill a part of yourself

In the
Distance
We see our friends dancing around a campfire
Though blurred
The world has never appeared so clear or simple

One day this life will kill us
Poisoned not only with the
Herbs
Fungus
And sorrows of the earth
But also
With the blissful illusion
Of
Youth
Freedom
And
Beauty
